About the author
Chronology of secret reporting and appearances (1969-1990)
The book, like all of Igor Omerza’s works, is a documented “anatomy” of the operations of the secret political police of the communist leadership of the failed state (the Udba nationalist movement) and belongs to the genre of non-fiction.
It differs from the writer’s other books in that Milan Kučan is not depicted as a victim of the secret police, as he could not have been, as an important figure in the Slovenian communist elite (and even its leader for a few years).
But Omerz’s book about Kučan and UDBA is somehow a double work. On the one hand, we can follow the extensive secret UDBA reporting to Kučan (and other communist cadres), which begins in 1969, and on the other hand, we can see what locals and foreigners think about Kučan, as UDBA carefully monitored and secretly recorded all such discussions and assessments.
From many secret reports to Kučan it is clear that he was briefed in a UDB manner with the help of “wall” microphones, telephone tapping, stalking, secret investigations, secret photography, postal control and informants. In this way, he daily obtained information about domestic, foreign and emigrant democrats (some of whom were also giants of Slovenian independence), domestic and foreign journalists, priests and rejected Slovenian and Yugoslav communists, etc.
The contents of most of the found archival documents will be publicly revealed for the first time. The book will be published in early June 2024 and will consist of over 560 pages, of which 50 pages are photographs and facsimiles of documents.
